A Macintosh is very easy to use, but neverteless there are naive users who don't understand anything about processes etc. All they see is windows on the screen, and to stop working they just close the window using the close box. But this leaves the application open, which can lead to confusion on one side, and on a shortage of memory on the other side. Quit It can take away this problem: whenever the last window of an application is closed, it will quit the application. That's all there is to it.
Preferences
You can specify settings for a total of 100 applications, plus default settings for all other applications. These applications are shown in the control panel. Quit It uses the signature of applications. This means that you can't specify different settings for different versions of the same application (for example Word 4 and Word 5). If Quit It can't find an application (this is possible if the disk containing the application is not mounted) it will display it in the list as 'Unknown'.
The settings include:
1) Should Quit It be active for this application.
2) Should Quit It ask for a confirmation before quitting the application.
3) Should Shift-Close overrule Quit It's behavior (and thus give the standard behavior).
4) Should an application be quit after all windows are closed, or after the last window having a closebox is closed. This last option can come in handy with programs who have some kind of toolbar (like WordPerfect 3.0 and Excel).
5) Should an application be quit after the last window was closed using Command-W. If this doesn't work for an application at first (try Word 5), select 'Try Harder'.
6) Should an application be quit after the last window was closed from the 'Close' menu entry. You can specify the string for this entry which comes in handy for non-english applications (for example: Close = Sluit in Dutch).
The preferences are stored in a file named 'QuitIt prefs' in the Preferences folder.
Compatibility
Quit It is designed to work with any Macint osh, provided you run System 7 or higher. It has been tested on a range of machines. I can give no guarantees however for any particular configuration.
Quit It might not work with some older applications, like an early version of MacPaint.
Warning
Don't rename the Control Panel to anything different then 'Quit It'. Otherwise reading the confirm dialog resource is impossible. You will hear a beep in that case, but nothing further will happen.

Why pay for it?
Quit It is shareware, not free. The registration fee is $15. This will give you permission to use all the shareware programs (currently including Line Up! and Keyboard PLUS) I have written so far and will write in the future! You will receive a disk containing the latest versions of all the shareware software I have developed. To those who have ever payed me before: feel free to use Quit It.
It is also possible to obtain a site license for $75.
Thank you
Thanks to: James W. Walker for providing the Help functionality. And to the authors of Excel for using TrackBox instead of TrackGoAway (and all the other strange things they do).
